Students in the INTENSE Mandarin Class (IMC) come from a variety of backgrounds and have different plans for the future.

You may meet graduates who are working full-time while preparing their applications for the INTENSE Program.

You may also meet third-year university students who are seriously exploring opportunities to pursue further education after graduation.

Others may have recently arrived in Taiwan and wish to continue improving their Mandarin skills so they can adapt more easily to their new academic and living environment.

Despite their differences in age, background, and future plans, IMC students share a common goal: learning a new language to open the door to new opportunities in education, work, and life. This is also one of the core values that the IMC Program aims to promote.

WHAT IS THE INTENSE MANDARIN CLASS (IMC)?

The INTENSE Mandarin Class (IMC) is a free Mandarin language program implemented by the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology – Taiwan Tech (NTUST), with funding from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan (MOE).

The program supports students and learners in developing the Mandarin proficiency needed for their study and career plans in Taiwan, particularly those who are interested in or preparing to apply for the INTENSE Program.

Each online course comprises approximately 250 hours of instruction and aims to help learners reach the A2 level. After completing the course, eligible students may also receive financial support for the TOCFL examination in accordance with program regulations.

Taiwan Tech has currently launched eight classes, from IMC1 to IMC8. As the classes began at different times, they are now at different stages of study.

The IMC community includes students who are currently studying or preparing to study at Taiwanese universities such as:

  • National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU);
  • National Tsing Hua University (NTHU);
  • National Taipei University (NTPU);
  • National Taiwan University (NTU);
  • National Cheng Kung University (NCKU).

They pursue a wide range of disciplines, including semiconductor technology, artificial intelligence, engineering, and other key technology fields.

THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT IMC

In addition to improving students’ Mandarin proficiency, IMC aims to create a positive learning environment and provide continuous support throughout the course.

According to survey results, 93.2% of students rated their satisfaction with the program at 4 or 5 on a five-point scale. The average satisfaction score was 4.50 out of 5.

One of the most highly rated aspects of the program is the support provided throughout the learning process. Teachers and teaching assistants regularly answer questions, review assignments, correct pronunciation, and monitor students’ progress—even in large online classes.

Beyond textbook-based learning, students also have opportunities to:

  • Practise communicating in Mandarin;
  • Become familiar with commonly used expressions;
  • Learn more about Taiwanese culture and daily life;
  • Meet others who share an interest in studying and working in Taiwan;
  • Exchange experiences and support one another throughout their learning journey.

CONTINUOUS SUPPORT AND IMPROVEMENT

IMC is more than a language course. It is also a community that connects learners who are preparing for their academic and professional journeys in Taiwan.

The IMC team greatly values students’ feedback and suggestions. Their contributions help the program gradually improve its teaching, course management, and overall learning experience.

We wish all IMC students continued motivation, greater confidence in using Mandarin, and even more progress in the journey ahead.
